Murray J. Harris, PhD

Murray J. Harris is professor emeritus of New Testament exegesis and theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Before his retirement in 1997, he served for 11 years as professor of New Testament exegesis and theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Prior to that he taught at Trinity during the 1967-68 academic year and from 1971-1978.

 

Dr. Harris has been an educator for forty years. For seven years he was an assistant master in Public Schools in Auckland, New Zealand. He taught at the Bible College of New Zealand and was a faculty member of the Divinity School in the University of Cambridge, England. He was also director of a biblical research library, Tyndale House, in Cambridge, a member of the New Zealand Council of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and founder of Tyndale College in Auckland, New Zealand. In addition to his educational responsibilities, Dr. Harris served as a translator on the New International Version Committee on Bible Translation.

 

Dr. Harris received the Bachelor of Arts in classics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand; the diploma in theology from the University of London; the Master of Arts in Latin and the diploma in education from the University of Auckland; the Bachelor of Divinity from the University of Otago, New Zealand; and the Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical Studies from the University of Manchester.

 

Dr. Harris's areas of expertise include evidence for the existence, resurrection, and deity of Jesus; New Testament Greek grammar; the Corinthian letters of Paul; Pauline theology; and expository preaching. He is a member of the Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical and Theological Research and the Society for New Testament Studies. He was awarded a Tyndale House Research Grant and received the Teacher of the Year award at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1973 and 1989.

 

Dr. Harris's published books include Raised Immortal (Eerdmans 1983), From Grave to Glory (Zondervan 1990), Colossians and Philemon (Eerdmans 1990), Jesus as God (Baker 1992), Three Crucial Questions about Jesus (Baker 1994), Slave of Christ (InterVarsity 2001), and The Second Epistle to the Corinthians (NIGTC, Eerdmans/Paternoster 2005). He also co-edited Pauline Studies (Eerdmans 1980). Harris is currently working on an edition of a twenty-volume series: Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament (Zondervan).

 

Dr. Harris and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Cambridge, New Zealand. They have two children and two grandchildren. In his spare time, Dr. Harris enjoys classical music, reading, and rugby, and is now a full-time caretaker for his wife, who has multiple sclerosis.
